We are no experts with regards to wheelchairs or how to get them, but we can offer you some suggestions based on experiences with my father who had a stroke 2 years ago.
1. If you are on medicare, they generally will pay for at least one device, be it a walker, wheelchair or something of that nature - they pay the medical appliance provider for 10 months and then you are given the option of a) keeping the wheelchair; b) continuing the payments yourself - kind of an easy decision there.
2. If you, your spouse, a child or other relative is or has served in the military, you/they can check with a local VFW and see if they have some chairs they will provide you if you/they become a member (membership is not as expensive as a wheelchair). What happens is that the families of members who pass away donate the chairs, walkers, canes, etc to the VFW for other members to use them.
3. You could contact local nursing homes/assisted care facilities, make them aware of your situation and ask if they have any you could have or if they would keep your name on file for when they might.
